Low Salt Diet May be Hazardous to Your Health

Most people are under the assumption that to lower blood pressure is to reduce salt intake. Some people even go as far as using salt substitutes only. Now doctors are saying that low salt diets could be hazardous to your health.

A study at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York analyzed the diets of 11,000 people who took part in the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey that started in 1971 in the United States concluded the possible harmful effect of low sodium intake. The Survey did not recommend low sodium as a dietary policy. But, they had found that the more salt people reported eating, the less likely they were to die from cardiovascular or other diseases. Moreover, at certain levels of salt intake, people consuming more calories are less likely to die than those who consuming fewer calories.

It is true for some people, but not all people, that less salt means lower blood pressure. However, there are lots of ways to lower blood pressure, and not all are good for you.

Then, just how much salt intake per day is the right amount? The relationship between salt intake and other dietary components may be so complex that across-the-board guidelines may never be possible. Although high salt intake have been linked to high blood pressure, osteoporosis, stomach cancer, asthma, and fluid retention, restricting salt intake could be even more harmful to your health! Therefore, until more studies of low salt diet are being conducted and proven, one should be careful with adopting a low or no salt dieting.
